WTF? you say? Good.

My computer is named Sable. I am using a Cooler Master WaveMaster case:

I am currently running
  • AMD Athlon X2 4200+
  • Zalman CNPS9500
  • DFI LanParty-UT SLI-D
  • 4GB RAM(4x1GB)
  • ATI 3850 256MB w/Accelro S1 & 120mm fan
  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • Saitek Eclipse
  • Razer Lachesis

Well, I was running a 3850. I finally got in the 90 degree SATA cables I needed and was able to drop a EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 896MB in this morning. This is the first step in a new computer for me. ;)

I have a ASUS P5Q Pro coming that should be here in a couple of days. I also have a Q6600 along with a AF7 Pro CPU cooler that should be shipped over this coming weekend. A friend is sending me some DDR2 RAM, but it is coming from Australia, so the guys on Tech-Forums are seeing about getting me some sooner (donated by those who are upgrading to DDR3).

Yeah, it's all second hand and last gen, but I don't care at all. My rig has served me well for four years with a few upgrades (CPU, RAM, graphics card, hard drives), and so I am looking forward to getting some more serious power. :p

Now I just need to work in some time to game...

Very Nice System, just finished mine, still have to add to it, SATA Drive, and RAM, but it runs pretty nice. Not Great But Nice
AMD Athlon X2 Black Edition
ASUS M2N68-AM SE2 Motherboard
1 GB RAM (Soon to be upgraded by OCz Ram)
NVidea 9400 GT 512mb
150 GB HD IDE
Windows XP Pro (Hacked Edition lol)
In an old Compaq case just to protect it

Hopefully i get better preformance with the new ram, but it is doing alright

That 9400 is your stumbling block (#56 on the list, here). I already have my 3850 promised or I would sell it to you dirt cheap (#35).

RAM speed won't make a lot of difference, but more will help you out. Your mobo only has two DIMM slots, but can handle 4GB (2X2GB). 2GB is a good spot to hit. Just remember that 32-bit Windows can only access 3.5GB, and that includes your video RAM.

Didn't know that, but 3.5 GB should be all i need for the next year or two until i get more money to buy another one.

:) yup most of the people doesn't know that.

i made the experience that good RAM memory really can improve the system performace. not just more but also quality RAM sticks.

Everyone knows that win32 has limited memory addressing!!!  LOL

Nice setup Trotter, good of your buddies over at the forum to help you out... If I could, I would of helped.

Well today I took my main windows design PC apart and cleaned it out completely, rewired it and setup a new RAID array for Windows 7 64 Ultimate.  Seems to be rocking so far... I also rewired my home server as well with Windows 7 64 Ultimate and Ubuntu Linux 64 dual boot on another array.  I have it networked up through a 1GB hub and it's also setup to do network rendering for any work done in Adobe, such as photoshop and after effects and for backups of my design PC and my Linux web server in London.  :)

I got a 15" macbook pro yesterday with a 2.8GHZ dual core cpu, 4gb DDR3 ram, dual graphics cards (1 is onboard 256mb ram and a dedicated card with another 256mb ram, if you enable the dedicated card it utilises the onboard memory to give you 512mb), 360gb hdd.  I have some leads for development coming up so I had to take the plunge and get a mac as the companies all use macs and I have to get familiar with them!  Seems pretty damn nice so far...  I'm about to setup a mac -> PC network via the 1gb lan as well as wireless for when I'm sat on the throne LOL!    My mum bought me the mac which is very nice of her :P

If and when I get regular work coming through I'm going to get a couple mac mini's which are mini servers for mac networks so you can backup your work on the fly and share files between your other PCs or allow external access.  I would also like to get us a dedicated gaming server so we can have lots of mini servers of all the different games we all play like L4D, DOD etc... that would be amazing if we could have that kind of resources!

So you're liking 7? It is well worth the upgrade to me for anyone running Vista. Well, XP, too... but it requires a clean install since it can't upgrade from XP.

It's not bad... for M$.  It's definitely better than XP and I'm not even going to compare it to Vista as that was as bad as ME when that was unleashed.

Windows 7 is the best M$ OS to date... at least it's not evolution but revolution as it was completely redesigned from the ground up.  I'm still a fan of Linux but there's issues with running any of the new Adobe products so I have to use it more for home development.

Snow Leopard 64 is nice... the multitouch pad is pretty sweet for a laptop!

Maybe i should upgrade as well, i was thinking about it but i am still a student and i'd hate to mess around with my computer mid semester. lol
Does it run all programs like normal like Power ISO, BF2, Office 2k7 without any hassle?

reply - Oct 21 2009, 21:09
I can confirm it runs all those Kev... I have them installed as well and I also have PowerISO mount drive being shared across my network.  It's working 100% for windows 7, linux and macOS.

All you have to do is save your files to disc or a pendrive to give you piece of mind.  It would most certainly worth the upgrade.  Don't forget you will get a great discount for being a student as well... check M$ student scheme and you'll see.

I still like running XP because it still takes no ram! i,m running a match pair of  2 gig Kingston sticks and i know also that XP only sees 3.5 but still XP sucks up nothing in ram ! I,m still a firm believer in power so thats why i have stuck a 1 gig ATX12V / EPS12V Enermax ! so with 5 rails it gives me 100% clean &true power to all devices! I run a 500/7200 spin but i would love to buy the same with 10,000 spin anyways thats my little input :) the only thing i want for X-mas is a new V/card and maybe the new dispatcher at work! she rocks when she send us our work orders hehe  lol

Leave the Fire series alone. they are workstation cards. You want a graphics powerhouse, like this one:

XFX 5870 1GB DDR5

Forget the 10000 RPM drives. Get a SSD (Solid State Disk) for some killer speed:

Corsair Storage Solutions 128GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk

Now, where you're going to get the $830 CAD for it is between you and the wifey. ;)

" Get a SSD (Solid State Disk) for some killer speed"  now can u buy large capacity drives yet? and if u can i guess they are kinda pricy huh? because i would love to have one but when i was looking last year they were small drives only and the price yikes lol

The 128GB I linked to is $399.99 CAD, while a 300GB Velociraptor is $290.66 CAD (Link).

They make bigger SSDs, but 128 would be more than enough. Most of TF (who have them) get a 60GB for their OS and main games, and then a Western Digital Black for their programs. The WD Black series is extremely fast, not far behind the Raptors.
