VOIP For Gaming.... - Dec 21 2009, 23:11

Well after a couple days messing with TS3 with Marti and Mascot we are kinda sick of it I think!  It's far too clumsy, too many permissions and seems like there's going to be an awful lot of issues for the near future.  Not to mention a license system that might have an effect on our running.

Marti mentioned another VOIP program called Mumble and I done some quick searches and it seems to be very good in terms of latency, it's open source and it's actually being integrated in to games due to it's better performance.

I personally don't like TS3 all that much, I don't like the look of it and the way it seems to be going so I would be happy to try other options.

Has anyone tried Mumble yet?  Vent uses a license as well so that's not really on my list of alternatives either.

Here's a quick sample of the latency between the 3 programs.

I think I might throw up a server and try it out for a couple days to see how it goes... TS3 is still BETA I know but it's honestly not looking good and it's went way beyond a simple communication platform for gamers.  I think they have went commercial on it's fan base.... good going boys!

We have been trying out Mumble today and it's actually not bad!  It's really lightweight, has no bloat and we can create our own skins but it's maybe not quite what we need.

I don't think there is a website monitor either so.... we need to try something else!

Ventrilo is not free, but it's not expensive, either. It does work very well and we wouldn't need a big server.

I will try to do some searching for some free alternatives, though.

I think we can run Vent for free as long as we are not taking money for slots and it's run within license.

I'm currently working on integrating TS3 with the Team Pages.  You will be able to register your TS3 account on your own profile page and this will be authenticated with the TS3 server.  Once you submit your key to the database, you will be able to join TS directly through the website with permissions to move around the server.

Right now all users can access the lobby, you will have to register your TS unique key with the server and this will allow you to move to other rooms.  You will be able to reset/re-register your teamspeak if you decide to reinstall windows, you won't have to ask me to reset your password; it will be all done by yourself in the new gamer profile pages that I'm developing.

:)
